Electronically Commutated Motors are a superior choice for dairy ventilation fans.

Their efficiency, longevity, and precise control enhance cow comfort, productivity, and overall farm performance.

Our EC Motors run on alternating current (AC), yet they bear a closer resemblance to a direct current (DC) motor. The ECM is a permanent magnet, brushless DC motor that incorporates on-board electronics. These on-board electronics are a big part of the beauty of our EC motor as it combines the best features from both the AC and DC motors, and then improves on them.

The ECM does not require a VFD. The ECM is the VFD.

Part of the efficiency advantage of the ECM is that the external VFD required by standard AC, or Permanent Magnet Motors, also adds to additional electrical usage. On the contrary, our ECM fans are highly efficient (IE5), providing lower operating costs and an extended service life. Some of the benefits of going EC:

Energy Savings:

EC motors are highly efficient, consuming significantly less energy compared to standard AC motors. This efficiency holds true not only at full load, but also at lower loads.

By using EC motors in ventilation fans, dairy farms can reduce their energy consumption, leading to cost savings and environmental benefits.

Reduced Heat Generation:

Unlike traditional AC motors, EC motors produce much less heat during their operation. As such, the windings and bearings undergo less stress, prolonging the lifespan of the motor components.

This reduction in heat loss translates to further energy savings and contributes to a cooler environment in the barn.

Extended Lifespan:

EC motors are designed for durability and longevity. Their robust construction and efficient operation result in a longer lifespan compared to a “conventional” motor. Dairy farmers benefit from reduced replacement and maintenance costs.

Speaking of maintenance, Lower Maintenance Costs:

With fewer moving parts and less wear and tear, EC motors require minimal maintenance.

Reduced maintenance leads to both cost savings and less downtime for the ventilation system, giving producers the time to focus on other critical aspects of managing the farm.

Precise Control:

EC motors offer excellent controllability. They respond swiftly to changes in demand, allowing for precise adjustments in fan speed and airflow. This adaptability ensures optimal ventilation based on temperature, humidity, and cow comfort.

Installation cost:

As EC motors do not require an external VFD, there is time saved during the installation process. Also, there is less electrical cable that will need to be run.

Environmental Friendliness:

A benefit of high efficiency is less energy losses to the environment. These losses are typically in the form of noise/sound and heat. Commutation is performed by electronic circuitry, providing higher accuracy.

EC motors contribute to a greener footprint due to their energy efficiency as we have mentioned, but they also help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using less power.

Overview of Components: :

  • EC motors are compact and lightweight, making them suitable for a variety of applications.
  • They integrate seamlessly with electronic control systems, enabling advanced features such as variable speed control and automation.
  • The maximum speed of a conventional AC motor is limited to a standard rating called synchrony speed. This metric is based on the number of electromagnetic poles and the frequency of the power supply. Our EC motor is capable of exceeding rated speeds, which allows fans with ECM to achieve higher capacity.
  • ECM power distribution is much cleaner. They do not completely depend on voltage or frequency; so small changes in voltage do not affect motor output.
  • The large shaft & bearings withstand higher thrust (axial) loads, and can repetitively drive the load & resist twisting. Their Nylon Airfoil Blades provide uniform, high-volume airflow with low power consumption, and the stronger nylon blades can safely run at low RPM.
  • The motor “rotates” vs using the frequency of the AC power to make the motor spin.
  • With the ability to continuously monitor motor function and then automatically adjust the control input, high efficiency is maintained throughout the operable speed range.
  • The brushless motor ensures a long service life of trouble-free operation.
  • Our EC Motor has a IE5 efficiency rating.
  • Magnets are coated to be able to resist up to 155C.
  • Each motor is individually tested for 100% quality control.
  • Our EC Motors are Maintenance free motors.
  • Motor is on a quick attach base.

Some Stats:

  • The 55” BD Panel Fan when operating at 100% provides a CFM or 24,600, at an efficiency of 22.6 CFM/W vs the EC DD Panel Fan which at a similar CFM is running at 85% with an efficiency of 30.1 CFM/W
  • The 55” PM DD Panel Fan when operating at 85% provides more CFM, is less efficient than the EC DD Panel Fan at 24.7 CFM/W compared to 30.1 CFM/W and uses more electricity per hour compared to the EC Panel Fan.
  •  The EC Panel Fan when providing a similar CFM (25,742), runs faster, uses less electricity (0.954 kW/Hr vs 1.041) and still maintains a higher efficiency compared to the PM Panel Fan

inBarn Fans provide best in class airflow capacity, performance, product quality, motor efficiency & electricity savings.
